Dr Denis Mukwege, a Congolese doctor, pastor and future Nobel Peace Prize winner, meets Guy Cadière, a Belgian surgeon and atheist. Despite their differences, they unite for a common goal: to restore the bodies and dignity of thousands of women who have been abused as weapons of war in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. For 30 years now, rape has been used as a weapon of war in the region around the mines to instil fear in the local population and force them to flee.
Every day, numerous women are brutally attacked and left for dead. With the Panzi Hospital, Dr Mukwege helps these women by treating their horrific injuries and offering them a safe place to recover. The inaction, complicity and silence of the authorities (both the Congolese government and the UN) have prompted Dr Mukwege to become the spokesperson for these women, who have been destroyed by these heinous crimes and whom Roux's camera shows unflinchingly and bluntly on screen.
