Gerhardt Haag was born in 1949 in the Northern Black Forest, and attended the Max-Reinhardt-Schauspielschule in West Berlin from 1970-1973. Thereafter he worked as an actor and directorial assistant in the city theatres of Gießen and Mainz, before founding the Freie Werkstatt-Theater in Cologne in 1981. In 1995, he took over the direction of the Theater im Bauturm - Freies Schauspiel Köln.

For many years he has cultivated close contacts with the theatre scene in Burkina Faso. In 2011, he organised the first africologne theatre festival there.
