Mehdi Lallaoui is a French-Algerian writer and filmmaker who has directed nearly 50 documentaries. His work centres around the themes of migration, the history of the labour movement and colo-nial history. He is the author of five novels, three volumes of poetry as well as over a dozen works of non-fiction. They include ‘Un siècle d’immigrations en France’, ‘Du bidonville aux HLM’, ‘Exils, exodes, errances’ and ‘Monique H. Nanterre 1961’ which mainly focus on the situation of Algerian immigrants in France.The film LES MASSACRES DE SÉTIF, UN CERTAIN 8. MAI 1945 (A DIFFERENT 8TH MAY 1945 – THE SÉTIF MASSACRES IN ALGERIA), presented by Lallaoui in Cologne and Wuppertal on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, was screened at several festivals and also in a German version on TV channel ARTE. The 1995 film was one of the first attempts to break through the wall of silence that had suppressed the memory of French war crimes committed in Algeria up to that point
