When South African universities increased tuition fees in 2015, there were initially peaceful protests at the University of the Witwatersrand (“Wits”). “Fees must fall” was the battle cry of all the demonstrators who demanded the poorer black population retained access to further education. Four prominent student leaders explain how the situation escalated when the university’s vice-chancellor Adam Habib, a former anti-Apartheid activist, called 1,000 police officers onto campus. This resulted in nationwide confrontations that left three people dead and 800 injured. Director Rehad Desai was always at the heart of the action with his camera, as he documented the students’ valiant attempts to disrupt the traditional power balance and underlying social inequality, and his efforts have been recognised with many awards both in South Africa and worldwide.
