At his mother’s graveside 10-year-old Lucky promises to make something of his life. He leaves his home, a small Zulu village, and hopes his uncle in Durban will take him in. But the uncle is far from happy about his nephew’s arrival. By chance, Lucky meets an older woman of Indian origin who has a deep-seated fear of people with black skin. Despite this and the fact they speak different languages, an unusual relationship develops between them.
In Lucky the director AvieLuthra, himself of Indian origin, has created a wonderfully gentle film. He brings great sensitivity to the theme of the barriers that exist in South Africa between black people and those of Indian descent labelled “coloureds” by the racist apartheid regime.
