The stomach ache that 20-year-old Sofia has been experiencing turns out to be contractions. But giving birth
out of wedlock in Morocco is not that easy: the hospital gives her 24 hours to find papers for the father before
they alert the authorities. Sofia’s shocked middle-class family also want the situation dealt with as quickly as
possible, as her father has his hopes pinned on a lucrative contract, and a scandal would put it in jeopardy.
Sofia’s own feelings are barely taken into consideration. Focusing on the way Morocco deals with extramarital pregnancies – which are taboo but hardly uncommon – Meryem Benm’Barek takes an uncompromising look at the double moral standards prevalent among its middle class. The acting is superb, there are some stunning shots of Casablanca, and the film’s screenplay won an award at Cannes in the “Un Certain Regard” section.
