Zaineb is a nine-year-old Tunisian girl who loses her father in a car accident. She has barely come to terms with the pain when she is hit by another shock: Her mother meets an old flame, who is now a divorcee living in Canada. Zaineb is horrified to have a potential new stepfather and fears that she’ll have to move to Canada. And that is precisely what happens. Zaineb has to say goodbye to all her school friends and start a new life in a strange country with a new stepsister.
Director Kaouther Ben Hania is the cousin of Zaineb’s mother and in ZAINEB TAKRAHOU ETHELJ (ZAINEB HATES THE SNOW) she has crafted a wonderful portrait of adolescence. She accompanied her cousin’s daughter for many years and documents her turbulent leap into a new world and a different culture and religion with a wonderful lightness of touch.
