On 25 May 2013, the African Union (AU) celebrated the 50th anniversary of its formation. For this occasion, the Third World Journalist Net (DWJN e.V.) held a competition for African caricaturists. The theme was “African Unity: Illusion and Myth or Imperative and Opportunity”. 68 artists from 20 African countries submitted drawings. Cartoonists from South Africa (Dr. Jack and Curtis), Kenya (Victor Ndula) and Tanzania (Samuel Mwamkinga) were awarded prizes.

Since then, a selection of the best works has toured throughout several countries. The caricatures bring to mind visions of Pan-Africanism, which were championed by political leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana and Patrice Lumumba of today`s DRC. They reveal political realities in ways that are sometimes funnily ironic, other times bitterly sarcastic. Yet the cartoons also stand both for the hope that African unity can one day be achieved, and for the promise of thereby improving living conditions for people across the continent. The exhibition offers rare insight into the multifaceted culture of political discussion in Africa.
