The central figure of Naji Ismail’s Egyptian documentary film is Halima Mohamed Ahmed, alias OM AMIRA (“Amira’s mother”). Because her husband is sick and her oldest daughter is suffering from heart trouble, Om Amira must take over providing for her family in downtown Cairo, all on her own. Just a few metres away from Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated since 2011, she sells fried potatoes at her street stall all day long.
